ISS Round 5, Malahide, Dublin, 14th/15th September

Poster Slalom Series 2013Round 5 of the Irish Slalom Series takes place on the Malahide Estuary over the weekend of the 14th/15th September.

Join us for a fun packed weekend of slalom racing in Co. Dublin!

There will be races for Novice, Silver and Gold fleets – newcomers welcome.

Like last year, Malahide Yacht Club have opened their doors and allowed us access to their fantastic facilities at the Broadmeadows. On Saturday night there will be a get together for dinner and drinks at the St. James Terrace clubhouse in Malahide village.

Registration:
We ask everybody to register on-line at www.irishslalom.ie, as this will speed things up on the day. Registration will be open between 9am and 10am on Saturday morning. We are aiming for the first race at 11am. For anybody who registers on the day there will be a €5 surcharge that will go directly to the RNLI. If you want to make this donation please feel free to register on the day.

Racing:
The Malahide estuary should be familiar to many of you but for those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to sail there it is a fantastic windsurfing spot. For racing it offers options in nearly all wind directions with some great flat water blasting to be had. It is also one of the most friendly locations you could ask for being completely enclosed and shallow for much of the way across. For those of you new to racing or indeed giving it a go for the first time you can’t find a better venue.

Location & parking:

We have a couple of parking options  for the weekend with the field to the back of the club available to us and also the usual parking on the grass along the shore front.

Light wind options:
We will have access to a number of Kona One design boards and rigs to try some fun match racing if there any lulls in the wind.

Meal on Saturday Night:
There will be a meal on the Saturday night in the Malahide Yacht club house in Malahide village. The price of the meal is €15. You can pay at registration on Friday evening or Saturday morning.

Surfdock Slalom Event 15/16th September, Malahide

The Gold Fleet in action

Last Silver Fleet race of the day

Last weekend saw the Irish Slalom Series travel to Malahide Co. Dublin for Round 4, and the penultimate event of the year. The newly built Malahide Yacht Club was very kindly opened up to windsurfers and the amazing facilities made the perfect base for a great weekend.

Notable performances in the gold fleet came from the first and second placed racers Maurice Owens and Hannes Louet-Feisser who dominated many of the days races. Other standouts were from IWA wave champ Rob Jones who sailed all day on a 6.0 and 86 Litre JP and still made it go fast! Barry Whitelaw for a personal best of 4th overall and IWA President Gareth Nihill for a hard fought 3rd place podium finish in challenging conditions.

The Silver fleet racing over the weekend was very hotly contested with close quarter no holds barred heats a constant feature. There were many heroes over the two days but the final results placed Paul Green in 1st, Steve Lawless in 2nd with an impressive overall performance from Paul Rayner to take 3rd.

In the Ladies comp Alison Beirne just held off Joanne Murphy to take first Lady overall for the event. Top Youth racer for the weekend was Lewis Eickholt.

Competitors who made the long journeys to attend were treated to a weekend of sunshine and wind, camaraderie and a successful event. It was well worth it… Malahide delivered.

Congratulations Maurice!
